The Original Affluent Society

by Marshall Sahlins, PhD., read by Rowan WalkingWolf

This classic essay by professor of anthropology professor Marshall Sahlins is a seminal work in the development of anarcho-primitivist thought. In this essay, Sahlins examines the abundant leisure time, minimal work hours per day, and the prolific cornucopia of wild foods and goods available to hunter-gatherers, concluding that hunter-gatherers are the original affluent society. He also visits the concept that civilized society is the society of waste and want, deprivation and need.

  1. Love these and have directed others to The Pacifism as Pathology resource. It’s brilliant and I’m so glad that it actually comes in the form of an audiobook.

I’m wondering if you take requests. It would be so awesome to have Haymarket Books’ version of “The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975″ also done in audio book form. I think a lot of people would be grateful to have it in alternate forms that would make it more accessible to a wider audience.

Thank you so much for what you’ve already done here.

Thanks for the kind and encouraging words! Yours is actually the first feedback of any kind I’ve gotten about the audiobooks, even though I get tons of emails about the zines, so thanks!

As for requests, I’ve never done one, but I am open to the idea. I’ve never read/heard “The Black Power Mixtape”, but I’d certainly love to. Do you know where I can get a free copy?
